Traditional Illustration

Traditional Illustration work - My colored pencil works blend reality and fantasy into a personal vision expressing my singular fascination with the natural world, particularly that of the far north. I draw on elements of folklore from Slavic peoples and Eurasian First Nations, and fold them into inspiration encountered on my own travels. Through this work I explore themes of our relationship to nature, especially our desire to conquer and control it, and how it inevitably pushes us out and punishes our hubris. The tension of this flawed infatuation is expressed figuratively through human interactions with powerful animals both real and imagined, and literally through man-made spaces being slowly absorbed back into nature. A combination of reality and fantasy, darkness and levity, color and decay, each drawing is a visual contronym; a window into a curious but inviting little world.
